Common questions about OpenLMS
What does "HK$0 licence fee" actually mean?
It means the platform licence costs nothing. The core runs on GPL open-source code with no per-seat, per-module or annual renewal charge. It does not mean the total cost is zero: hosting, configuration, integration, content migration and the administration hours all still exist, and we quote them as separate, scoped lines before you commit to anything.
Is OpenLMS something we buy, or a project you run?
Both, in a specific sense. The platform is something you own outright once it is deployed — code, data and configuration sit in your infrastructure or your chosen hosting. The work of getting it there, and the content, is what we do for you. We are not reselling a licence and we do not hold your data hostage to a renewal.
Do we have to change how our training works?
No. We map your existing process onto the modules and configure the platform around it. A successful deployment usually looks like your own forms, approval chain and reports, running on the platform — not like the platform with your organisation forced into it.
Can it run on-premise instead of in the cloud?
Yes. On-premise, private cloud and managed hosting are all supported. On-premise is frequently the right choice where employee or student records need to stay inside your own network under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. Examination delivery can also run on isolated networks with no public internet.
What happens if we stop working with you?
The site keeps running. You keep the code, the data and the configuration, and you can export everything in standard formats. Custom development lives in your own repository. We would rather be useful than unavoidable — that is a deliberate consequence of not charging you a licence.
