Open source vs commercial LMS in Hong Kong
Commercial Hong Kong LMS products are excellent at what they do, and they are built to earn licence revenue. This page sets out the trade-off honestly — including where open source is the worse choice for you.
Key facts
- Open source advantage
- The platform is HK$0 for every customer, every price is published, no seat count, no vendor lock-in, and full data and code ownership.
- Commercial advantage
- Faster out of the box, contractual SLA, more polished UX, and vendor accountability without your own technical team.
- Honest assessment
- Open source is the wrong choice if you have no one to run the platform, if you need contractual uptime guarantees you cannot self-deliver, or if a proven out-of-the-box experience matters more than ownership.
- Our position
- We will tell you if that is you. The platform is free; the decision should still be right.

When open source is the right call — and when it is not
OpenLMS is right for you if…
- Licence cost per staff member is a real line in your budget
- Employee training records must stay inside your infrastructure
- You want to own customisation rather than rent it
- You plan to run offline or isolated-network examinations
- You need trilingual Hong Kong content as standard
- You can commit internal or partner effort to configuration
A commercial LMS is right for you if…
- You need a working system next week with zero configuration
- You require a contractual support SLA with penalty clauses
- Your team has no technical capacity and no willing partners
- You need very specific features already finished and certified
- You are consolidating a small number of subsidiaries onto one contract
- You would rather pay predictable licence fees than staff effort
Our recommendation
Start with the open-source platform for the LMS and training operations layer, because that is where the data and the long-term cost advantage live. Use a commercial product only where a specific capability gap justifies it — and only after we have shown you that the gap is real rather than assumed.
Questions about comparing platforms
Is this comparison biased?
It is written by us, and we are an open-source practice, so it is obviously a perspective. We think it is also an honest one: the comparison includes the cases where a commercial licence is the better economic answer, which is a real and common outcome for small organisations. We do not publish vendor pricing we have not verified, and where a figure is unknown we say so instead of estimating.
Do you publish what commercial Hong Kong LMS products charge?
Only where we have verified it, and we cite the source. Where a vendor does not publish pricing, we do not guess, and we do not repeat figures we cannot substantiate. For the major product most often compared against us, the relevant published page is linked from the comparison itself so you can read the vendor's own description rather than our summary of it.
Is an open-source LMS always cheaper?
No. If you have very few users, need something working immediately, and have nobody available to run the platform, a commercial licence can genuinely be the lower total. The saving appears at volume, over time, or where the platform has to be adapted to your processes rather than the other way round. We would rather tell you that early than after you have committed.
Should we switch platform now, or wait until renewal?
That depends on your renewal date, your record-keeping obligations and how much of the platform you would actually use. Often the cheapest first step is to keep the current system for another cycle, gather the data you need to compare properly, and scope a migration assessment with no obligation. We will say so if that is the better sequence.
Do you publish a written comparison of specific vendors?
Yes, and it is clearly labelled as an independent comparison that implies no partnership, affiliation or endorsement. We do not use another vendor's name to imply a relationship that does not exist, and we do not make claims about their pricing, satisfaction, defects or internal workings that we cannot verify.
Want a second opinion on your situation?
Tell us your constraints — headcount, data residency, timeline, internal capacity — and we will tell you which side of this table you should be on.
